Caterpillar Club Wednesdays - Family Literacy Fun!

This FREE program is a FUN, educational, multi-sensory approach to early childhood literacy, designed for families with children ages 0-5, accompanied by a caregiver, but ALL ages are welcome! Each gathering takes place in our Community Center on Wednesday mornings, 10:30am - 12:00pm.

We will come together in a safe, welcoming space each week to dance, play, sing, rhyme, craft, explore science, practice letters, and enjoy stories read aloud. Above all, Caterpillar Club is an opportunity for kids and their families to have FUN together while learning the basic skills of early childhood literacy. Exploring the sounds, rhythms and the stories of language is a rewarding experience for everyone!

Here at Caterpillar Club we want everyone to know that they belong as soon as they walk through the door! We are excited to be a small part of your child’s early years of discovery. After the program, you are very welcome to gather in the orchard and enjoy connecting with other local families w/ children under the apple trees. Please join us!

Mah-Waan (WELCOME): The Story of Hotel Santa Fe & the Picuris Pueblo

September 20, 2025
6:00 pm

Join us Saturday, SEPT 20th at 6:00 pm in the library as NM author Daniel Gibson and principal photographer Kitty Leaken as they introduce the book and the story behind how this venture came to fruition back in 1991 and what it has come to mean to the Picuris Pueblo.

ABOUT THE BOOK: In a sea of Native culture there is only one hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico that is owned and operated by an Indian tribe. That lodging is Hotel Santa Fe, and it is the pride and joy of Picuris Pueblo. The hotel is a microcosm of Pueblo life and culture, from its Pueblo Revival architectural form and hundreds of interior decor and design elements, to the delicious meals served in its dining room, the staff that graciously greets you, and the calm sounds of a Native American flute floating through the lobby in front of a crackling “kiva” fireplace. A world within a world, the tranquil Hotel Santa Fe, braided together from many disparate strands, has many many lessons to teach our world today.

This book explores how this unique property came to be in 1991: the challenging but ultimately successful merging of a group of non-Native investors, combined with an English manager of immense charm, and its Picuris Pueblo owners. It delves into the investors’ personal stories, including famed New York developer William Zeckendorf, hotel manager Paul Margetson, and other prominent Santa Feans. It also includes a major chapter devoted to the amazing past and present life of Picuris Pueblo located 60 miles north of Santa Fe. Once the dominant Pueblo in northern New Mexico, its history extends back to at least 900 A.D.

It is adorned with 191 high-quality images of art, architecture, and interior design elements, plus photos of its ground breaking and dedication, and pictures of its principal non-Native investors. It also includes historic photos of Picuris Pueblo by the likes of Edward Curtis, T. Harmon Parkhurst and John Collier, and plus portraits of leading Picuris people today like Lt. Governor Craig Quanchello and the tribal cacique. Principal photography was done by Kitty Leaken, along with Pete Longworth. It also includes photos from a slew of other well-known Santa Fe photographers, as well as quotes by Santa Fe writers who wrote about the hotel in various media over the years.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Daniel Gibson is a native New Mexican. He studied journalism and photography at the University of New Mexico, and has since worked as a writer and editor for numerous local, regional and national publications, serving as editor of Native Peoples magazine from 2001-2013. He has also written a handful of books, including Pueblos of the Rio Grande: A Visitor’s Guide, Kevin Red Star: Crow Indian Artist, and Skiing in New Mexico: A Visual History. His book MAAH-WAN (WELCOME): The Story of Hotel Santa Fe and Picuris Pueblo was released in December 2024.
